How to choose a car app for your BYD: a checklist

The app you install on the car screen reaches your cameras, your location and your car's data. When you choose, do not look only at the feature list; look at the eight questions below. For each question, Yoldaş's answer is written too, so you can compare it with your own criteria.

Last updated: October 6, 2026

1. Which feature works on which car?

Do not expect an app to work the same on every BYD. Depending on the software version of the car screen, the camera, cluster or window commands turn on or off. A good app says this clearly, model by model.

  • Ask: Which features are listed for my model and software version, and which are not?
  • In Yoldaş: every model page has a table of supported features. To see what the version number means, read the DiLink 3, 4 and 5 guide.

2. Is recording reliable?

The real test of a recording app is that the recording is there at the moment you need it. Try the scenarios of a few hours parked, the car switching off and on, and full storage yourself.

  • Ask: Is recording unbroken? Does it start on its own when the car is turned on again? When storage is full, which recording is deleted, and can I protect an important clip?
  • In Yoldaş: recording runs continuously in clips; when storage is full, the oldest recording you have not protected is deleted, and after hard braking the 30 seconds before and after are protected automatically. Details on the Dashcam page.

3. Where does the data stay?

Camera recordings are the most sensitive data. Ask whether the recording stays in the car or on a server, whether live view is stored, and whether identifying data such as the VIN is sent.

  • Ask: Are recordings uploaded to a server on their own? Is live video stored? Are the VIN or location sent? Can I delete my data?
  • In Yoldaş: recordings stay in the car and are fetched to the phone when you want. Live video passes through the server and is not stored. The VIN never leaves the car. Location is sent with a separate consent. "Delete this car's history" in the phone app deletes the data on the server. Details on the Security page.

4. Language and units

  • Ask: Are the car screen and the phone app in my language? Can I choose units such as kilometers or miles, °C or °F?
  • In Yoldaş: Turkish, English, German, Portuguese, Polish, Arabic and Korean; Arabic is written right to left. Units (km or miles, °C or °F, kW, PS or hp, bar, kPa or psi) can be set.

5. How many steps is the install, and is the source clear?

  • Ask: Do I need a computer to install? Where do I get the file? Is the hash of the file published?
  • In Yoldaş: the APK always comes from the download page; its hash is published there and there is a guide on how to verify it. Installation is done from a USB stick or with ADB; the helper component is set up from the car screen, with no computer.

6. Is the update safe?

  • Ask: Does the update download over HTTPS? Are the signature and package name checked before installing? Can an older version be installed as if it were new?
  • In Yoldaş: all versions are signed with the same key. Updates download only over HTTPS and on an unmetered connection; the integrity, package name, version number and signature are checked before installing. An older version is not installed as if it were new.

7. How many permissions, and why?

  • Ask: Which permissions does it ask for, and does each have a clear reason? Are the microphone and location each behind a separate consent?
  • In Yoldaş: the camera, microphone, location, display over other apps and notification permissions are listed one by one. The microphone is used only if you turn on cabin audio, and location is used with a separate consent.

8. Does it protect the car's energy while parked?

An app that runs while parked can drain the 12 V battery and the traction battery. The app should have a lower limit.

  • Ask: Does the app stop itself when the battery or the 12 V battery gets low?
  • In Yoldaş: connectivity support while parked stops if the battery falls below 20% or the 12 V battery below 12 V (with the charging cable plugged in, this condition is not checked). Details in the install guide.

A quick three-day test after installing

  1. Day one

Finish the installation, grant the permissions and record a short drive. Open the recording on your phone.

  2. Day two

Park the car for a few hours. When you come back, check whether the parked recording and the notifications arrived.

  3. Day three

Switch the car off and on, and see that the app starts by itself and that recording carries on. Compare the car's 12 V battery and the battery percentage before and after parking.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a car app for my BYD?

First check what the app supports on your car's software version and model, then check how reliable its recording is, where the data stays, which languages it supports and whether its updates are signed. The list below puts these criteria as questions.

How do I test recording reliability?

Park the car and leave it for a few hours; when you come back, check whether the recordings are unbroken. Switch the car off and on and see whether recording carries on by itself. When the recording space fills up, check what happens to old recordings and whether you can protect an important clip.

How can I tell that a car app is safe?

Look at the permission list and check that each permission has a reason. Confirm that updates download over HTTPS, that their signature is checked and that the hash of the install file is published. The privacy page should say what data is collected and how to delete it.
